- Abstract
The article focuses on the role that Austrian Chancellor, Clemens Wenzel Lothar Nepomuk Prince von Metternich played in Austria's involvement in Syrian affairs in 1840-1841 to ensure a secure existence for Syrian Christians. It states that Metternich's views concerning the security of Christians living in Syria and on the future administration of Syria was motivated by a desire to weaken French influence in the region and respect for sultan Abdülmecid I of the Ottoman Empire. It comments on European intervention against Egyptian governor Mohammed Ali on the behalf of Abdülmecid, resulting on the restriction of Ali's power. It talks about long-term results of Metternich's efforts, including increased animosity between Maronite Catholics and the Druze and civil war in Lebanon.
