The article discusses naturalist Charles Darwin's study of emotional development. Particular focus is given to self-conscious emotions such as guilt, shame, and embarrassment. Details on Darwin's use of blushing as an indicator of emotions and on the use of other cognitive and bodily expressions in later studies are presented. The author's theories of emotional life are also discussed.
