Title
Biogeography: On jaws and geography.
Abstract
The article discusses two conflicting theories explaining the heritage of the flora and fauna of New Zealand. One hypothesis states that the rise in sea levels 22-25 million years ago fully submerged New Zealand and it was repopulated by later transoceanic voyagers. The other states that the landmass was partially submerged separating New Zealand from other continents. Analysis of the fossil jaw bones and teeth of the extant tuatara suggest the New Zealand was not fully submerged.
