- Abstract
This article draws on interviews done as part of the Voces of a Pandemic project with frontline Latina/o health-care workers, supplemented with research on the role of providers, patients, and families as patient advocates. Interviewees describe in vivid detail the harrowing experience of being on the front lines in the early days of the pandemic. The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges to Latina/o patients affected by family separation that was dictated by hospital quarantine rules, which forced patients and their families to find new ways of maintaining personal connection and navigating care issues. Our Voces interviews uncovered ways that Latina/o nurses and medical interpreters stepped in to address these challenges, indicating that Latina/o health workers have engaged in advocacy for Spanish-speaking and immigrant patients that goes beyond standard expectations for their professional roles.
