- Abstract
Humans acquire some part of their knowledge through reason and senses while they obtain some other part of it by means of khabar. The khabar is the only source of acquiring knowledge about the incidents that occurred and people who lived in the past, and the remote places that we have not seen. Therefore, the source of all kinds of knowledge, which are not based on observation and not gained through reasoning, is khabar. Among the khabars, the part that provides certain knowledge is mutawātir. In the 4th century Hijri, one of the scholars who examined the discussions about khabar thoroughly and dealt with this issue in their works in an orderly manner, is Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār, a member of Mu'tazila school, who stands out by putting an emphasis on the reasoning. He opened separate chapters in his works concerning the khabar and its value as a kind of knowledge and grounded his opinions regarding this matter in various ways. Moreover, he advocated the Qur'an, Sunna, and Icma', which are the primary sources of Islam, against the Sumaniyyah, who do not consider the khabar to be a source of knowledge and the Barahima, who do not accept the prophethood, using the methods of intellectual and revelational reasoning. In the present study, Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār's theory of mutawātir has been accentuated. While determining his ideas [on this matter], his book, named al-Mughnī, which has encyclopedical characteristics, has been used as a starting point. Qāḍī attempted to put mutawātir khabar on a rational ground both to confront those who did not count the khabar as a source of knowledge and to substantiate the primary sources of Islam. To do so, he used the term ,'ādatullāh', which was more sustainable and valid in the eyes of people and which has a more objective and rational character, or ,al-adah' meaning the laws of nature.
