- Abstract
Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) address their activity to «young people, especially the poorest ones». That is why in countries where the state takes good care to secure the education of all strata of society, as is the case in countries of Western and Central Europe, Salesians have in recent decades opened, besides their traditional works, such as schools and youth homes, structures that mainly involve children and young persons who find themselves on the periphery of society or in danger of social exclusion. There are not many establishments like that so far but they are very much needed. However, they require staff with a different qualification than has so far been common. On the one hand the professionals working in these facilities want to realize the Salesian mission, but on the other hand they also must respect the assignment and rules of state agencies and organizations supporting them. Thus, three different conceptions sometimes clash: social work, social education (Sozialpädagogik), and Salesian youth ministry. Against the background of the Czech Republic, where the Salesians carry out a series of social projects, the author asks himself whether and how the conflict of these concepts can be replaced by their mutual enrichment, thus obtaining a synergy that will benefit the recipients of the Salesian mission -- young people.
