- Abstract
The book "The Big World and Little Paula: A History of Disability" by Heinz Becker tells the life story of Paula Kleine, who spent the majority of her life in institutions. The author manages to embed her story in societal, political, and personal contexts without neglecting her dignity. The book also addresses the professional history of disability support in the 20th and 21st centuries. Heinz Becker worked in disability support for a long time and accompanied Paula Kleine for over 20 years. The book provides concrete explanatory models for the causes of the diagnosis "intellectual disability" and examines the development of people with disabilities in a historical context. The text describes the life story of Paula Kleine, who, due to the policies of the Nazi Party, had to change institutions multiple times as a child and was eventually transferred to a sanatorium. The author raises the question of how Paula Kleine survived these traumatic events and explains that she was able to find support through her adaptation strategies. After World War II, she received a special position as an assistant and was able to develop new interests, particularly in acting. The author emphasizes that the implementation of inclusion has not yet been fully achieved and that the debate about a life worth living and a life not worth living complicates efforts towards inclusion.
