- Abstract
The article "Believing without belonging" discusses the effects of societal changes on churches and their proclamation of faith. The individualization thesis states that people can remain religious even without explicit affiliation to a religious community. A study confirms this thesis and shows that there is a particularly noticeable increase in religiosity in urban contexts. However, this development behaves differently in German-speaking countries. The article discusses various approaches to explaining this phenomenon, including the secularization thesis, the market theory, and the individualization thesis. It emphasizes the importance of a differentiated understanding of religiosity and spirituality and that not all transcendent experiences should be considered as religious spirituality. The relevance of this distinction for adult baptismal pastoral care is discussed.
