- Abstract
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare form of cutaneous cancer – neuroendocrine carcinoma – and is commonly found in sun-exposed regions of the body. The risk fac tors include UV radiation, infection with Merkel cell polyoma virus (MCPyV) and chronic immunosuppression. The mor ta li ty rate for MCC is estimated between 30% and 50%, and the five-year survival rate for metastatic disease is only 25%. The therapeutic options for MCC include multimodal treat ments such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and the immunotherapeutic treatments emerged with pro mi sing early results. Immunotherapy targeting the PD-1 pathway is the first-line treatment recommended in patients with advanced MCC due to higher response rates.
