The Blue-Water Navy Dilemma: Does Indonesia Need It?
- Authors
AKMAL, MOCHAMMAD JOSE
- Abstract
The article discusses the dilemma faced by Indonesian military planners regarding the need for a large and costly navy. Indonesia, a nation with a significant maritime landscape, relies heavily on maritime industries for livelihoods and has a robust naval force. However, there are concerns about the efficacy of the navy in safeguarding Indonesia's territorial integrity, especially in light of escalating maritime sovereignty breaches. The article explores the concept of a "blue-water navy" and suggests that instead of pursuing this status, Indonesia should focus on fortifying coastal defenses to defend its territorial waters and maintain sovereignty.
