- Abstract
The article discusses the issue of the U.S. Supreme Court within presidential campaigns from 1800 through the 1970s. An overview of the relationship between the Court's power and the U.S. President's ability to appoint Justices to the Supreme Court is provided. The U.S. Republican presidential candidate and Senator Barry M. Goldwater's highlighting of the president's appointment power in regard to Supreme Court justices during his presidential campaign is discussed. An overview of the Wisconsin Senator and third party presidential candidate Robert M. LaFollette's critique of Supreme Court decisions is provided.
