The article offers information on the sugarcane smut which is caused by a bsidiomycetous fungus, Ustilago scitaminea. It discusses smyptomatology which includes development of whip like structure apex of the stalk, emergence of whips from infected canes after 2-4 months with peak whip growth and covering with silvery white thin coat after rupturing blackish spores.
