Assessment of Mental Health and Physical Fitness in Old Age Home Inhabitants of Delhi.

- Abstract
Background: According to World Health Organization (WHO) 15% of older adults aged 60 or over have their mental health affected in some or the other way. Moreover, poor mental health constitutes 6.6% of total disabilities in old-age subjects. Not only the community dwelling older adults come under this umbrella, rather it is a combination of both community and institution dwelling older persons population. The reasons for a poor mental health could be many and same as for a poor physical health. It has been expected till 2050, the population aged over 60 would approximately be doubled up. In this study, self-structured form had been circulated among the older adults of old age home inhabitants of Delhi which acted like a tool to separate the individuals who had a history of any medical surgery, injury/trauma, conditions like diabetes, hypertension etc. Then the segregated individuals were asked for their consent for further intervention. Selected subjects were examined through mini mental status examination. Furthermore, the individuals were examined through the DASS21 Scale. Then they were examined through yale physical activity to assess their physical activity. At last, they were examined through Senior Fitness Test to assess their physical fitness. Methods: Geriatric population residing in old age home inhabitants were taken for this study. Convenience sampling has been used in this study. Sample size - 120 It has cross sectional study design and correlation study design. Methods of data collection - Questionnaires Results: Most of the individuals are having some kind of cognitive impairment. DASS21 has shown that almost everyone has a normal mental health. Whereas everyone shows some form of physical impairment, all are falling under the category of high risk. Conclusions: Cognitive impairments are being observed in almost every individual; a regular visit of a psychiatrist in old age home inhabitants to ensure a better cognition. Mental health of almost every individual came out to be normal. Physical fitness of each individual came out be at high risk; a regular visit of a physiotherapist has been suggested in order to ensure a good musculoskeletal health of older adults.
