The article discusses the relation of the religious experiences of prisoners to theological wisdom. Topics include the role of rehabilitation in the intentions of the Philadelphia Society that originally promoted the modern penitentiary, rites related to prisoners in the "Book of Common Prayer," and the author's experience of teaching the book "Confessions," by Augustine of Hippo, to prisoners.
