- Title
Quel horreur!: Violence in Reformation France.
- Authors
McFadin, Christopher
- Abstract
The article focuses on sectarian violence that occurred in France during the 16th century. It states Roman Catholicism maintained a hegemony in Western European religious life until the advent of the Reformation by violently repressing the spread of heterodox beliefs and mentions the Albigensian Crusade from 1209-1229 with the suppression and killing of French Cathers as an example. It talked about the vandalizing of Catholic churches by Huguenots and the mutilation of Huguenot corpses by Catholics and suggests Huguenots eschewed physical violence due to their being in the minority and lacking sufficient numbers to commit widespread and prolonged massacres. It comments on duels and tyrannicide in France and suggests duels represented a deep commitment to extract retribution for evil done.
