- Abstract
The article explores the early history of St. Louis, Missouri and the trading career of French settler Pierre Laclède. The author reflects on the historical records of Commandant Pierre-Joseph Neyon de Villiers and Laclède's attempts to establish trading outposts. Other topics include fur trading with Shawnee Indians, the fashion tastes of Shawnee women, and trade with Indians in British territory.
