The article discusses the courtship of Germantown, Kentucky, native Maria Savage by Glasgow, Missouri, native James Oswald Swinney in the mid-19th century. The article describes Savage's background and Swinney's studies at Yale University and the University of Virginia. The article states that Swinney met Savage during a visit Savage paid to Glasgow in 1847. The article also describes Swinney background in Howard County, Missouri. It states that the primary means of communication during their courtship was letter writing.
