- Title
CARTRIDGES, CAPS, AND FLINTS: A PRIMER FOR ARCHAEOLOGISTS.
- Abstract
The article presents information on the use of materials related to firearms for purposes of archaeological dating. Items discussed include cartridge casings, bullets and gunflints. It is noted that metal cartridge ammunition largely replaced muzzle-loading techniques in the 1860s, and some of the identifying characteristics of these cartridges are described. However, the designations of cartridges are said to be far from systematic, due to the relatively arbitrary and inconsistent naming conventions of various manufacturers.
