- Abstract
After heavy and prolonged wars of Tsar Simeon I the Great (893-927) against the Byzantine Empire, a nearly 40-year peace was settled between Bulgarians and Byzantines in 927. Tensions between the two major powers in the Southeast Europe, however, continued to smoulder. In 965, between the Bulgarian Tsardom and the Byzantine Empire, a conflict broke out that developed into one of the longest wars in the Balkans. This is the half-century BulgarianByzantine epochal duel ended with the conquest of the Bulgarian Tsardom in 1018. For 45 years a major figure in defending the Bulgarian freedom and independence was Cometopoul Samuil, who was proclaimed autocratic Tsar of Bulgaria (997-1014). With his life and government, Tsar Samuil gave occasion of historians to call the Bulgarian Tsardom of that time “Age of Tsar Samuil” (Plamen Pavlov) and the long war of the Bulgarians with the Byzantine Empire “Bulgarian epic” (Vassil Gjuzelev). Due to the bright trail that Samuil has left in our medieval past, it would be fair Bulgarian history from the end of the tenth and early eleventh century be characterized as a history of Samuil's Bulgaria. It was filled with drama and majestic heroism, pain and much suffering - this was the era of the great Bulgarian Tsar Samuil.
