- Abstract
In this article, the author responds to writer Lauren Derby's criticism of his review of the book "The Dictator’s Seduction: Politics and the Popular Imagination in the Era of Trujillo," which Derby herself authored. He critiques the quality of research regarding the subaltern resistance to the presidency of Rafael L.Trujillo of the Dominican Republic. He also questions the evidence used to back up Derby's investigation and the arbitrary nature of her comparative study of Africa and the Caribbean nations, two vastly different cultures, which lead to incongruous conclusions, according to the author. He is also largely critical of the translation problems and exoticism evident in her work.
