The article discusses 18th-century French painter Jean-Étienne Liotard and his trips to London, England where he participated in the 1773 exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts. The author discusses pastel portraits by Liotard at the exhibition and identifies the sitters using notes of the exhibition from art historian Horace Walpole. The author analyzes the painting "Self-Portrait with a hand on the chin" and discusses a portrait of the physician Dr. Thomas Thompson, who treated poet Alexander Pope.
