- Abstract
The article offers a look at the works of portrait painter and engraver George Clint. It is noted that his expertise at engraving helped him learned develop oil portraits into group scenes. In this Clint was to prove the master of the theatrical genre in the early 19th century. His preparation for each subject was comprehensive, involving sketching in the theatre, discussion and development of the painting. Clint's engraving of the trial scene from William Shakespeare's "Henry VIII" heralded his oil paintings of the players. A comparison between the theatrical portraits by John Zoffany and Clint is provided.
