- Title
Sir Thomas Lawrence and France.
- Authors
Meslay, Olivier
- Abstract
The article discusses the connection of British artist Sir Thomas Lawrence to France. His first visit to the country was in September 1815 at the request of the ambassador, Lord Stewart, in whose residence he stayed in the rue de Fréjus. Of all his works shown in the French Salons or painted in the country, none gained such wide circulation through engravings or lithographs as the "Portrait of the duc de Richelieu." A summary in a few extracts from letters of both the history of the picture and the political issues which could still be raised by the image of Duke Armand-Emmanuel de Richelieu is provided.
