Managing Sustainability and Scalability with Successful Archival Projects: Two Lone Arranger, Dual-Role Archivist Case Studies.
- Authors
Johnson, Autumn M.; Merryman, Ann E.
- Abstract
This article discusses two case studies of lone arranger archivists who have successfully collaborated with faculty and students to develop collections and provide teaching resources. The archivists recognized the importance of building partnerships with faculty and leveraged traditional library software and archival resources to facilitate collaborative projects. The article also provides a literature review on the role of lone arranger archivists and the challenges they face. The case studies highlight the need for time management and support in managing the workload of dual archivist/librarian roles. The first case study focuses on supporting special collections digital exhibitions using LibGuides CMS at Georgia Southern University. The University of South Carolina Upstate's Special Collections unit has been working to increase engagement with the university community by creating digital exhibits using the LibGuides CMS platform. Graduate students and faculty advisors have been using the platform to curate digital exhibitions and fulfill program requirements. The Special Collections Librarian provides training and support for using the platform, and the projects have resulted in increased donations to the collections and raised the profile of Special Collections. However, the success of the partnership has also posed challenges for the librarian in terms of time commitment and competing priorities. This article discusses two collaborative projects between a lone arranger archivist and faculty members at their respective institutions. The projects involved translating and digitizing historic documents related to World War II. The projects were successful in providing students with valuable learning experiences and creating digital collections with research value. However, the lone arrangers faced challenges in terms of scalability and sustainability
