- Title
Are You A Part of the Problem or the Solution?: Perspectives on the Achievement Gap in Two Hudson Valley Communities.
- Authors
Tchir, Emily C.
- Abstract
The article discusses differences in academic achievement between racial and socioeconomic groups. Particular focus is given to a comparison between public school systems in Peekskill, New York and Valhalla, New York. According to the author, a key factor in the relative success of Valhalla students is the involvement of parents and other mentors in the school community. It is suggested that improved teacher education and a greater presence of minority adults as mentors and authority figures can help to motivate Black American and Latino students.
