- Abstract
The child and the family are on a journey through a dense forest. They are unfamiliar with the territory. Your role as a hospice nurse is to be their guide. It is their own journey, and in many ways, it is shared by no one. However, the family will need assistance along the way. While you have never been through their particular forest, you have been in similar ones. The hospice nurse guide provides light on the path for the child and family. The light can be information, reassurance, pain control, or any resource that is timely and appropriate. Often, the family will require just a small portion of the path ahead to be illuminated for them. At other times, they will ask for longer range guidance. Remember, it is their journey. Offer to accompany them.
