- Abstract
The article presents a detailed examination of armors in 16th-century portraiture in Western Europe. Portraits are described as paramount images in art history that are marked for their historical accuracy. Armors have been recreated either in the steady deterioration of its use as a functional agent in the battlefield or in its extended application as a symbol of power and fortune. Several paintings are analyzed including the "Portrait of Alfonso I d'Este."
