- Abstract
"Powering American Farms: The Overlooked Origins of Rural Electrification" by Richard F. Hirsh is a revisionist history that challenges the dominant narrative of federal agencies, such as the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), as the primary drivers of rural electrification in the United States. Hirsh argues that private power companies played a significant role in extending power to rural communities and experimenting with electricity on farms before government programs were implemented. The book explores the contributions of private utility coalitions and raises questions about the environmental implications and alternative paths that rural electrification could have taken.
