- Title
Bend to Avoid Breaking: Job Loss, Gender Norms, and Family Stability in Rural America.
- Authors
Sherman, Jennifer
- Abstract
The article discusses how changes in the labor market affect family life and sex roles in rural communities of the U.S. that are constructed around a specific industry. The loss of rural jobs in the forestry industry based in the Golden Valley community of Northern California due to environmental regulations and deindustrialization is noted. The author suggests that flexible gender roles are more conducive to a stable home environment due to the potential inability of men to serve as the sole means of financial support for a household following labor changes and job losses. The ability of men to have different conceptions of masculinity in regard to parenting is discussed.
