- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Suicidality and depression are public health problems. Sexual violence is related to suicidality and depression. However, it is necessary to explore if this relationship is the same for all forms of sexual violence and if it has cumulative effects. OBJECTIVE: To identify which types of sexual violence, predict suicidal behavior and depression in Mexican adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Online survey to school adolescents from 20 states of Mexico. Three types of sexual violence were measured using the ICAST-C questionnaire. Depression and suicidality were assessed using the Youth Self-Report questionnaire validated in Mexican adolescents. Logistic regression was performed to predict suicidality and depression. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: 6775 adolescents with internet access participated, 61% of whom were female, with an average age of 16.40 years (SD = 1.33). 18.07% reported some form of sexual violence, 4.3% depression, and 7.39% suicidal behavior. It was found that all three types of sexual violence significantly predicted depression (χ2 (3)=58.06, p<.01) and suicidal behavior (χ2 (3)=263.16, p<.01) individually; the forms of sexual violence increased the likelihood of having depression or suicidal behavior by 1.5 to 2.3 times. Cumulatively, more than six forms of sexual violence can increase the likelihood of depression or suicidal behavior by up to 9 times. CONCLUSION: Three forms of sexual violence significantly predicted suicidal behavior and depression with cumulative effects.
