- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between bodybuilding and the idealization of manual labor in U.S. from the mid 19th century through the early 21st century, including in regard to capital and capitalism's culture. The impact that the demand for mental labor played in American middle class men's concerns over masculinity, including bodybuilding's role in regaining masculine pride through the toil of the body, is discussed.
