THE INFLUENCE OF UNIONISM UPON EARNINGS: COMMENT.
- Authors
Lester, Richard A.
- Abstract
The article presents a comment and reply on the influence of unionism upon earnings of labor organizations. From limited statistical material, the economist Arthur M. Ross finds a consistent association between the degree of organization in 1945 and the increase in real hourly earnings between January 1933, and January 1945. It is noted by Ross that labor organization may affect wage structures and wage levels. This note does not discuss alterative methods. It is confined to some critical comments on Ross' data and conclusions. Ross compares the percentage increase in real straight-time average hourly earnings for 44 manufacturing and extractive industries between January 1933, and January 1945. The average hourly earnings data of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics were used. For various reasons, change in industry definition, reclassification of establishments, readjustments for sample biases data for early years could not be made comparable with those for later years. The results indicate the need to apply more refined techniques and more detailed and careful analysis in order to determine and compare the effects of labor organization on hourly earnings in particular industries.
