- Abstract
This study aimed to determine colostrum quality and failure of passive transfer ratio using a Brix digital refractometer in cattle in the Samsun region. The study was conducted in the colostrum of 180 cows and in the calves of these cows on 40 cattle farms. Farms were divided into 3 groups as: family type, medium scale, and large scale according to the size of dairy animal numbers in a farm. In this study, 60 animals were included in each group. Colostrum was evaluated as good quality if the brix value of the colostrum was ≥22% and as poor quality (insufficient) if it was <22%. When analyzed all animals in the study groups, colostrum brix values were found to be good quality at 77.8% rate and poor quality at 22.2% rate. Failure of passive transfer formation was detected in 50% of all calves due to a brix value of serum total protein concentration lower than 8.4%. In the farms studied, it was determined that 97.2% of the cows were not vaccinated during dry period; 80% of the calves were born in the winter season; 32.2% of the colostrum was not given on time; 35% of the calves were not given enough colostrum; the amount of colostrum was unknown by the breeders in 45% of the calves; 55.6% of the calves were fed from the mother, and 83.9% of them was housed together with the mother. As a result, it was determined according to the findings of brix refractometer analysis that the quality of colostrum was insufficient at 22.2% rate in cattle, and failure of passive transfer was found to be at 50% rate in calves reared in the farms of Samsun province.
