- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the state of the art of international scientific production on greenwashing. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework covers essential concepts related to greenwashing, exploring definitions, mechanisms, and motivations, including ethical and sustainable theories that underlie the research, as well as the explanation of empirical research on the topic. Method: The methodological approach adopted is bibliometric, analyzing 638 Web of Science articles from 2004 to 2023. The collection involved titles, abstracts, and keywords, providing an understanding of the main trends in scientific production on greenwashing. Results and Discussion: The last three years (2021, 2022 and 2023 until May) were the most relevant to the theme, concentrating more than half of the total publications of the last two decades. In addition, it was found that the concept of greenwashing is expanding beyond its purely environmental connotation, and has been encompassing a holistic approach that considers all ESG dimensions as well as other aspects. Research Implications: The implications for researchers and practitioners interested in understanding the current state of research on greenwashing, providing insights for strategies for detecting and preventing these deceptive practices and new research opportunities. Originality/Value: Originality lies in the detailed bibliometric approach and critical analysis, contributing to the literature by revealing temporal patterns, changes in research topics, and identifying gaps in knowledge about the greenwashing phenomenon.
