- Abstract
The author reflects on venous air embolism (VAE) during vitrectomy that occurs basically due to pressure in an open vein. The author states that the condition can prove fatal in cases after air-fluid exchange during the surgery. A study has been conducted by ophthalmologists where in donor eyes that were not suitable for tissue donation were used for simulated vitrectomies. The pathophysiological consequences of VAE, use of vasopressor and venous catheter are included.
