- Abstract
The outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic had a major social and economic impact on society worldwide. The measures imposed by governments to attempt to control the contagion were perceived as arbitrary and as an attack against individual freedom by many people, especially anti-vaccine groups. During the course of the pandemic, these groups found an excellent political opportunity to increase their social and media profile, first as the pharmaceutical companies raced to develop the first vaccine and subsequently throughout the vaccination campaign. The anti-vaccine groups were particularly active during this time and, using collective actions and the Internet and social media they called for protests and demonstrations against the measures they considered unfair. This study takes an ethnographic approach to the anti-vaccine movement in Catalonia during the COVID-19 pandemic to characterize the phenomenon, the different profiles in the movement, its discourses and its claims.
