- Abstract
Objective: to verify the association between functional capacity and the demands of institutionalized elderly, according to the theory of Virginia Henderson. Methodology: descriptive, cross-sectional study developed with 203 elderly people from a Long-Term Care Facility for the Elderly. The Katz Index and an instrument based on Henderson were used, with socioeconomic, clinical data, and physical examination. Pearson's chi-square test was performed. Results: elderly people who presented demands on the need to move and maintain a good posture, dress, and undress, communicate and learn, most of them were grade III dependent. For the needs to maintain temperature and occupy, the degree of dependence that most prevailed was II. Conclusions: The fundamental human needs to move and maintain good posture, dress and undress, communicate and learn, maintain temperature and occupy were statistically associated with a greater degree of dependence on institutionalized elderly.
