- Abstract
The article discusses an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York called "Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn." The exhibition explores a little-known prequel to Picasso's history in America, revealing that he was commissioned by Hamilton Easter Field to create a suite of "decorations" for the library of Field's brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. Although Picasso never finished the commission, the exhibition brings together the surviving canvases, providing a glimpse into what the completed project might have looked like. The exhibition focuses on Picasso's Analytic Cubism phase, showcasing works from 1910 to 1912. The article also discusses the appropriate style for such "decorations" and compares Picasso's work to other artists who created decorative panels.
