- Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the influences of Fletcher Percussive Breath® on selected respiratory parameters of young ballet dancers. Fifteen female ballet dancers, with a mean age of 12 years, underwent a specific training program with the Fletcher Pilates® Method for four weeks, twice a week. The variables evaluated before and after the intervention were: thoracoabdominal cirtometry, maximal expiratory time (Breath-a-Cizer), inspiratory muscle strength (SIndex), inspiratory flow (PIF) and mean volume of inhaled air (POWERbreathe®). Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk test followed by the Student t or Wilcoxon tests, according to the normality test results of each domain analyzed. The values with significance (p <0.05) were: Xiphoid Expiration (p = 0.01), Xiphoid Variation (p = 0.00), Abdominal Variation (p = 0.01 ), SIndex (p = 0.00 ) and PIF (p = 0.00). These results demonstrate a better abdominal activation, greater rib cage mobility and consequently an improvement in the coordination and use of breath. It is concluded that the practice of the Fletcher Pilates® method can bring great benefits and positively influence the mechanics and respiratory muscle strength of classical ballet dancers.
