- Title
PARTICIPATORY INDICATOR DEVELOPMENT: WHAT CAN ECOLOGISTS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES LEARN FROM EACH OTHER?

- Abstract
The article discusses a case study that examined how participatory and ecological methods can be combined to develop robust indicators accessible to a range of users for the monitoring and enhancement of the sustainability of land management in Kalahari, Botswana. Pastoralists from three study sites were asked for potential environmental sustainability indicators, which were evaluated and tested empirically using ecological and soil-based techniques. Results indicate that these knowledge were thinly spread and were more holistic than published indicator lists. The authors suggest that it is possible to derive more accurate and relevant indicators by combining participatory and ecological approaches than using either approaches alone.
