- Abstract
This article draws from interviews conducted in Madrid with women in lesbian relationships within the project INTIMATE: Citizenship, Care and Choice: The Micropolitics of Intimacy in Southern Europe. I will analyse the narratives of women in lesbian coupledom paying particular attention to the extent to which they are suffering from slow violence (NIXON, 2006-2007) in contexts as diverse as families of origin, public spaces and at institutional level, where straight mind (WITTIG, 2006) still persists. To address the liberalization of a wide range of intimate transformations, I use also the concept of intimate citizenship (PLUMMER, 1995) to explore how women in the context of lesbian coupledom struggle for the right to fulfil their intimate lives, the public implications of their choices, highlighting, at the same time, their contribution for social change in a vast array of practices.
