- Abstract
In this study, the relationship between economic growth and tourism revenues is investigated using data from the 1995-2018 period for the top 10 tourism revenue countries (USA, Spain, France, Thailand, United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Germany, Japan, India). In this context the relationships between variables are examined using Kónya (2006) panel causality analysis. The results show that the tourism led growth hypothesis is valid for Thailand and Germany, whilst the feedback hypothesis is valid for Spain and the neutrality hypothesis is valid for the USA, France, UK, Italy, Australia, Japan and India. The fact that there is no causal relationship according to the overall results may be due to the relatively low share of the tourism sector in the economies of these countries. Other findings of the analysis indicate the existence of unidirectional or bidirectional causality between tourism revenues and economic growth. Accordingly, it will be beneficial for the economic welfare to implement policies to expand the tourism role for these countries.
