- Authors

- Abstract
Among other genres of life-writing, the study of autobiography has been a recent phenomenon. It is basically a study of identity, the self and its exploration. Autobiography as a genre is variously defined by critics owing to its interdisciplinary nature. This paper examines the origin, growth and development of autobiography in India and analyses especially the tradition of writing autobiographies by Indian men. This paper also focuses on the fact that though life-writing as a genre was popularized in the West, but the art of writing autobiography existed in India from times immemorial, has continued to be written by people from various fields and still is in progress creating a tradition of Indian autobiographies.
