- Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine elementary school students' attitudes towards mathematics. The participants were 436 students of the 2nd to 8th grade from an elementary school in Zagreb. All participants completed Attitudes towards Mathematics Inventory, ATMI, Tapia & Marsh, 2004. The results show that the differences are statistically significant in attitudes towards mathematics, associated with the variables gender, age, and academic achievement. Male students performed more positive attitudes than female students in dimensions self-confidence, enjoyment of mathematics and motivation, and no differences in value of mathematics. Students 2nd, 3th, and 4th grade show more positive attitudes towards mathematics than students 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. There is significant difference between attitudes of 2nd and 3th grade, and older students, as well as 4th grade students and older. There werw not found statistically significant differences between students attitudes towards mathematics regarding their math teacher. The most positive attitudes towards mathematics show students with high academic achievement and who participate in extra-curricular mathematics lessons. On the other hand, the most negative attitudes show students with low academic achievement.
