- Title
'82 Import Surge Picks Up Where 1981 Record Left Off.
- Abstract
The article discusses the rise of imported textile and apparel products in January 1982 after the American Textile Manufacturers Institute (ATMI) set a record trade deficit in 1981. The ATMI in Washington, D.C. reports that the January deficit rose to $595 million causing an increase of 41 percent over the January 1981 deficit. Robert E. Coleman, ATMI president and chairman of Riegel Textile Corp. states that the textile and apparel trade deficit accounts for nearly 12 percent of the total U.S. deficit, creating an overall negative trade balance. ATMI figures are based on data from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
