- Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to create awareness of menstrual disturbances among women working night shifts in information technology (IT). Introduction: Menstruation involves complex interactions of inflammation and vascular mechanisms to stabilize the endometrium and allows a regulated loss of endometrial tissues and blood. When this becomes abnormal, it can cause menstrual disturbances. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted among randomly selected women working night shifts in IT using a questionnaire. The questions were related to knowledge and awareness of menstrual disturbances. A total of 20 closed-ended questions were included in the study. Results and Discussion: A percentage of 59 agree to the fact that night shifts can affect their menstrual cycle. About 52.5% consider painful periods as the main indication of a menstrual disturbance, whereas 29% think that irregular periods are what menstrual disturbances are. Moreover, the remaining 18.5% consider both as consequences of menstrual disturbances. Conclusion: The women who participated in the survey are only slightly aware of how working night shifts can affect their menstrual cycle.
