- Abstract
Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Phaleria macrocarpa (Scheff.) Boerl fruit ethanolic extract against chloramphenicol-sensitive and resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Materials and Methods: The antibacterial activity of the extract was tested against those Staphylococcus strains using a well diffusion method. Then, the extract was serially diluted in broth medium and challenged by an inoculum of S. aureus strains to determine the lowest concentration of inhibition, which is defined as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value. Results: The antibacterial activity exhibited that P. macrocarpa fruit extracts strongly inhibited the sensitive S. aureus but cannot inhibit the resistant strain. The antibacterial strength of P. macrocarpa fruit extracts was supported by the lowest MIC value data of the extract at the range of 0.391-0.781% w/v. Conclusion: The fruit extract of P. macrocarpa could be categorized as a strong candidate anti-staphylococcal from natural product.
