- Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a systemic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia and hyperlipedemia. Boerhaavia diffusa is a herbaceous member of the family Nyctaginaceae. It is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics. It has a long history of uses by indigenous and tribal people and in Ayurvedic or natural herbal medicines. Method:The aim of present study was to evaluate antidiabetic and hyperlipidemic activity of aqueous and methanolic extract of Boerhaavia diffusa in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. The root extract of Boerhaavia diffusa was studied for antidiabetic activity in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats by oral administration of extract 200mg/kg body weight for 16 weeks. The determination of blood glucose level by GOD-POD kit method. Result:The result shows the methanolic extract of Boerhaavia diffusa significantly lowered the blood glucose of hyperglycemic rats more than the aqueous extract. The values of TC, TG, VLDL-C, LDL-C, HDL-C and its subfractions which increased due to diabetes was decreased to nearly normal values by administration of aqueous and methanolic extract of Boerhaavia diffusa. Conclusion: The study concludes that rats after 16 weeks of STZ administration became substantially hyperglycemic as well as hyperlipidemic which was overcome by intake of B.diffusa root extract.
