- Abstract
A dense exertion has been spend in the development of new biomaterials with a compatibility with biological systems. In this content, a primarily characterization study was achieved to evaluate the utility of alumina ceramics in biomedical applications with the stable chemical structure and non-toxic property. The high hardness property of alumina ceramics was improved by supporting with nickel phase. After nickel incorporation the changes in the structure of ceramic was determined with swelling behaviour and contact angle measurements. The biocompatibility of nickel supported alumina composites was tested with plasma protein adhesion. The antibacterial effect of composites against different bacterial strain was evaluated by the means of decrease in the colony forming. Contact angle was decreased 51.2° to 35.8° and swelling ratio importantly increased with nickel incorporation. Blood protein adhesion is an important factor for determining the biocompatibility. It was observed that a lower protein adhesion observed in all composites and the protein adhesion decreased with nickel phase increase. The maximum protein adhesion was observed as 0.18 mg/g albumin with Al2O3 composites without nickel phase. The colonies of bacterial strains were decreased in the range of 57-27% and thus composites showed an antibacterial activity. From the results it was determined that the nickel incorporation improved the surface properties of Al2O3 ceramics and nickel supported formulations showed a good biocompatibility.
