- Abstract
The article presents a paper that provides a comprehensive review of doctoral dissertation research in quality management(QM). The authors analyze the literature published since 1981, categorize the research, examine shifts in major research themes and discuss general trends in research on quality. An analysis by category and discipline shows that research under general management was concentrated in implementation (31 %) and human resource management (27%). Strategic issues only comprised (7%) of the general management research. Expected results in operations management (OM) and engineering showed a concentration in the area of process management (OM, 62%: and Engineering, 69%).The analysis indicates a shift toward more rigorous research methodologies and the use of theories from several disciplines leading to a more mature body of research on quality. Also, the current focus on supply chain management allows one to question how QM contributes to the overall value creation process. The results suggest that the overall interest in QM grew modestly during the 1980s and then increased significantly starting during the 1990s.
